I asked several mums how they defined the Nanny? They began by offering the generalisation that a Nanny is someone aged over 18 who has usually had relevant training, supported by a qualification in childcare OR has two years’ experience of sole charge caring for children, supported by good references. Expanding on this definition they began to explore the role of their own nannies which ranged from “generally expected to be responsible for the physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social development of the child/ren in their care, be able to organise daily routines to stimulate and develop these areas” to “proxy parenting”. One parent explained that her nanny is responsible for all household chores related to the children, but not responsible for other household duties unless agreed specifically.
Katy Lironi has worked as an ABC (Achieving Better Communication) tutor for Down’s Syndrome Scotland for the past 13 years. In this time, she has worked with babies, toddlers, children, teenagers and adults with Down’s syndrome to support them to reach their own communication potential. After many years using Makaton in sessions with children, as well as with her own middle daughter who has Down’s syndrome, Katy qualified as a Makaton tutor, and has since delivered Makaton training and workshops throughout the country to families and professionals who support anyone with a communication difference. She delivers workshops and training online and in-person, for professionals, families and those with communication differences.
One of the highlights of her work in recent years has been developing Choir 21. Choir 21 is a Makaton choir for teenagers and adults with Down’s syndrome. Since starting as an online activity during lockdown, 2023 and 2024 have seen Choir 21 take to the stage and delight audiences with their own unique Makaton signed performances, the highlight of which was being asked to perform as part of the Festival of Politics at the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood in August 2024. Katy is also the Makaton tutor for Aon Ghuth, the first Gaelic Makaton Choir to perform as part of the Royal Highland Mod (Festival of Gaelic language and culture) in Oban in 2024.
Katy is passionate about spreading awareness of Makaton as a fantastic way to support anyone with a communication difference. She loves working with children in the early years and with those supporting them, to enable best practice to start right at the very beginning, a very good place to start!
Katy has recently published her memoir, “Matilda in the Middle,” which recounts her life as a singer in bands in the 1980s. The book goes on to discuss how her 21 year old daughter with Ds has shaped her own musical output, while explaining how Matilda and others with Ds access and appreciate music and the role it can play in their communication combined with Makaton.
