Working with Families and Children with ASD/ADHD

We will be talking with the wonderful Mel Hieatt aka Camulodunum Nanny.

A little bit about Mel:

I first became a Nanny at 18 when I went to work in a Live-in position, for 4 children under 5, for family friends in Gloucestershire. This determined my love for Under 5’s and after having my own Children I decided to train as an Early Years teacher and Early Language Lead. After 16 years in the PVI Early Years sector, I took a sabbatical and returned to Nannying once more in 2019 and fell in love with it, all over again. Whilst my passion for Early Childhood has always been present, my interest and involvement with children on the Autistic Spectrum and with ADHD stems from the birth of my own children. My eldest son was born in 1996 and by the time he was 2 , I was very aware he had developmental and behavioural differences from other children of the same age. It took until he was 6, constantly fighting and advocating for him, whilst being made to attend numerous parenting courses; that he finally got a diagnosis of severe ADHD. My consequent two children also have ADHD and ASD and my middle son also has learning differences. After 28 years as a parent, having to navigate daily life, the education system, becoming a single parent and then an Early Years teacher; I have gained a wealth of experience and knowledge of living with ASD/ADHD. I founded a Facebook Support Group ADHD Kids UK in 2007, which now has 16.5K followers. As a Nanny I work on a daily basis with families with children and parents on the Autistic Spectrum; supporting and encouraging them and sharing practical advice from my own journey, wherever I can. ”
